What is MODY diabetes?
- MODY is an acronym for Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young. Diabetes comes in many forms, one of which is Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young, or MODY. This type of diabetes is more likely to be inherited than other types of diabetes, due to a stronger genetic risk factor.
What is a good Mody score for diabetes?
- Have a MODY probability score ≥20% if not insulin treated and ≥10% if insulin treated (see the MODY calculator) Referrals will be triaged by the Genomic laboratory. Testing is targeted at those where a genetic diagnosis will guide management for the proband or family.
What is Mody and how is it diagnosed?
- Glucokinase is the second type of MODY, and occurs when this gene (that aids the body in recognising blood glucose levels) malfunctions. This type of MODY can be hard to identify, and symptoms can be particularly slow in manifesting themselves. It is usually picked up during routine testing.
When should diabetes of the young (MODY) be diagnosed?
- Diagnostic testing for maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) should be performed where it is going to change clinical management. This is likely to be in cases where there is uncertainty either in the diagnosis or in how a patient should be treated.
